SPC: Semester Paperless Challenge
15 January 2006Posted By: AndrewPosted in: Going Paperless, News
This is Friday’s report on Sunday, mostly because two days of school doesn’t provide much to write home about. However, my challenge is shaping up very nicely. All of the classes that I have so far have at least some of the material online and that has been helpful.
I should probably also mention that I am using OneNote 12 for this challenge, so some of the features I talk about you might not be able to find in your copy of OneNote (unless you are a Beta tester as well). Just for the record, I do not have super powers that will get you in to the Beta test nor will I give you my product key.
I digress, despite some of the bugs present in OneNote 12, it is definitely better than the previous version. I especially like the “Import to OneNote” printer driver and it works significantly better then the PowerToy available for its predecessor, even letting you search printed documents.
Check back this Friday for more updates, just 16 more weeks to go!
On a separate note, I’ve sent the first round of Windows Messenger 8 Live Beta invites out, but I still have a bunch left! Leave a comment, but don’t be rude, don’t beg, and don’t mention Sony.

Hahahahahaha…16 weeks left. I know your pain! How are the bugs with ON 12? Does it really hinder you? I’m thinking I should have gotten in on that. I’d sure like to see what it can do. I have a couple of buddies that would probably test it out as well. Anyway, I’m looking forward to more of your SPC. I can only do it partially.

I was hopping to get one since I am the first one to post a comment.
Also this is my first time to post at StudentTabletPC!!!!!! (apart from leaving a comment in the guestbook, that is) - which is very cool!
Nevertheless, I am regularly checking this site! It’s at the top of my favorites list.

Sorry for mentioning Sony! I quite agree that what they are doing is wrong, especially in the US, we haven’t been affected as much in the UK.
Personally I’d like to see Apple bring out a tablet, I wonder if it’ll ever happen?

Will you be providing a breakdown of how One Note 12 compares to One Note 2003 for students? My love of One Note 2003 is what pushed me over the edge to get a tablet. I know you can use ON without a tablet, but it’s like driving a race car with speed inhibitor plates. I’m curious how ON 12 compares.

I am very interested in how your paperless challenge goes. I myself am starting my first semester at Indiana University with my HP TC1100. I received it with three weeks to go last semester and I decided to use Go Binder after looking at both that and OneNote. I am very interested in how OneNote 12 treats you for the entire semester(maybe I will switch next year). I am a Junior so I have two years previous with notebooks and therefore I will be able to decide whether to continue witht he tablet life when I head to law school or return to paper. I however can not bring myself to scan every book due to the amount of time and money I would lose. I typcally make about 75-90% of my textbook purchase back by buying and selling my books on half.com. Keep up the good work this site has become extremely useful in the last few months and I am interested in hearing how your challenge goes.

Your site is such an awesome resource!
I went through my first class today with pen and paper (it’s math, is that forgivable?) and decided to use the Tablet for the rest today. It worked perfectly! I can honestly say I had never been able to put OneNote to any effective purpose until I was in the classroom today. Before you know it, I had a folder for each course and had prepared sections in response to major projects the professor was announcing from the syllabus.
One of my professors (that I thankfully have two classes with) has most of the core material of his class avaliable online, including lecture outlines for each day of the course. Unfortunately, it’s set up with a couple of frames that would make the task of “printing” all that information to PDF a big pain. Not to mention the task of organizing and browsing it as I come across new links in the documents. Is there any software avaliable online to “mirror” a website onto my tablet, preserving links and such?
Thanks, Greg

Copying/mirroring a website
Greg, you might want to try HTTrack - its a freeware offline brower utility.
Link: http://www.httrack.com/
The last time I used it worked pretty well.

The exact name is “Microsoft OneNote Import”. It’s a pseudo printer driver that let’s your “print” (or import) pages to OneNote.

Since my primary use of my tablet is for art, I wondered if some purty roses might count as a cool post?
Done in ArtRage (brownie points!).
